Anselm Kiefer and Georg Baselitz are two of the most famous and prominent names in modern and contemporary art. Simply hearing them names brings to mind bold brush strokes, brash borders, and thought-provoking imagery, making art lovers and critics alike ponder and discuss these works at lengths. Acting as inspiration for their styles and stories, both artists' works are closely entwined with the dramatic history of Twentieth Century Europe, and overshadowed by the trauma of the second World War.

Led by maverick art historian, and Context favorite, Sabry Amroussi, this talk will compare both artists, telling each of their compelling life stories, and taking you through the complicated history of Twentieth Century Germany and how that impacted both men. From the gigantic installations of Kiefer to the famous "upside down" works of Baselitz, viewers will come away with a better understanding of the two giants of modern art, as well as German Contemporary art as a whole.

Sabry Amroussi is an art historian and writer living and working in Amsterdam. He specializes in the art of the Dutch Golden Age, mainly in the works of Rembrandt and his school, and has a keen interest in the Jewish history of Amsterdam. He lectures and teaches on both subjects and gives art historical tours all across Europe. As a true omnivore when it comes to art, culture, and even cuisine, he has worked with and for major museums and collectors, such as the LACMA, Rijksmuseum, van Gogh Museum and the P de Boer collection in Amsterdam. As a guide for Context, he is eager to share this knowledge in real life, always with a big scoop of humor, ofter intermingling art with social life, cuisine, and history.
