I normally don't do classes that take place in the evening EST. For Dr. Gavin Campbell, I make an exception! He is knowledgeable, entertaining, and the subject matter of his courses is so interesting.
I have taken and enjoyed all of Dr. Campbell's courses. I highly recommend them, but with Japonisme, he really hits it out of the park. If you have any interest in Japanese art and Japan's interactions with the West, I cannot recommend this course highly enough.
Most courses on Japonisme focus solely on the visual arts in the West. Dr. Campbell’s course presents a much needed view of the wider scope of this phenomenon and finally gives equal weight to the interchange between Japan and the West.
Dr. Campbell is an excellent lecturer. Highly knowledgeable, he clearly put a great deal of work into the Japonisme seminar, and noted in the final lecture that we'd viewed over 900 images. He makes fascinating connections between Japanese aesthetics and art and the development of Japonisme themes in the West. Most fascinating and new to me were insights into Japanese art, design, and fashion. I look forward to other offerings by Dr. Campbell
Gavin delivers an A1 presentation. Five excellent lectures on "Japonisme" and the wonderful cross pollination of East and West.
I love Japan (was there in 2019) and look forward to going again. I also love 'The Mikado" by Gilbert & Sullivan which Gavin mentioned.
