Learn the essentials that will take the stress out of planning that first trip to Japan, including where to go, when to go, and the correct etiquette for when you get there.

Planning your first trip to Japan can be a daunting task. There are the inevitable questions over itineraries; how many days should I spend in Tokyo vs. Kyoto, and what time of year is best to go? There are practicalities to consider such as how to travel around the country and what an average meal costs so you can work out a travel budget. And there’s the potential minefield of Japanese etiquette and the seemingly impenetrable language barrier.

Don’t panic! Pour yourself a soothing cup of green tea and sit back to enjoy this informative and stress-busting seminar, led by Japan expert and guidebook author Simon Richmond. Learn about such things as the different types of train and other transport passes and how to get the best out of them; how to stay connected by your smartphone or computer; how to behave at religious sites or on visiting a Japanese home; and what it’s like to stay at a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn, or go bathing at a public onsen, a hot spring bath.

Led by Simon Richmond, the author of travel guidebooks including the Rough Guide to Japan and Lonely Planet Japan, this interactive seminar aims to answer most, if not all, of your Japan travel queries. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away confident of a successful premier adventure in the land of the rising sun.

Japan Overview

It was a nice overview of the variety of different ways to spend time in Japan. I really appreciated the insider tips from someone who's spent so much time there during what seems like all of the seasons.

Enthusiastic, with nice photos

Simon did a great job of conveying how varied & lovely Japan is. For real first-timers like us, however, it was pretty overwhelming. Speaking as a teacher, I think it would have worked better to organize the sites by types of things to do or provide a couple of “typical” itineraries for people who want history & nature or contemporary art & pop culture.
