Join a Scottish historian for a virtual tour of the Scottish places most closely associated with the Jacobite uprisings of 1689-1745.

Featuring some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery and beautiful historical monuments, this seminar will explore the various attempts by the male line of the Royal House of Stuart to reclaim the British throne following the Glorious Revolution of 1688-9. Exiled to France and replaced by his Protestant daughter and her husband, William and Mary, the deposed Catholic King James II and VII immediately began plotting his restoration. What followed were several uprisings in the name of James and later his son, who was hailed by his supporters as the rightful King James III and VIII. The last and most successful of these uprisings was the famous 1745 revolt led by the charismatic Charles Edward Stuart, better known today as Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Taking the form of a virtual tour around the Scottish places most closely associated with the Jacobite rebellions, this seminar will include dramatic tales of bravery, intrigue, deceit, and cruelty. It features Highland castles such as Braemar and the iconic Eilean Donan, which were both laid waste in the struggle for power, as well as Holyrood Palace, where Bonnie Prince Charlie made plans for a march on London. The sites of the most important military encounters will also be discussed, including the location of the brutal Massacre of Glencoe, the picturesque Killiecrankie Gorge, and the melancholy Culloden Moor, where the 1745 rebellion finally came to a bloody end.

Led by a Scottish historian, this interactive seminar will provide a perfect introduction for anyone who wants to know more about the Jacobite history of Scotland. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an insight into the fascinating places which witnessed many of the key events of modern British history.

Alan Montgomery was born and raised in Scotland but has spent most of his adult life in London. In addition to his work for Context Travel, Alan also writes catalog essays on Contemporary Art for a leading auctioneer. Elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in 2017, his first book, entitled 'Classical Caledonia', was published by Edinburgh University Press in August 2020.

A Detailed Historical Summary

Dr Montgomery related such an informative history of this interval of Scottish history in this session. Since I have visited some of the sites (Pass of Killiecrankie, Cullodon, Blair Castle, Holyrood Palace, Nairn) that were mentioned in this seminar, it was most interesting to me to understand further the history. Beautiful photos shown and portraits of the major players added to the content. Very organized presentation starting with an outline. Dr Montgomery also answered so many questions at the end. Loved listening to his Scottish accent also!
