Join E.Y. Zipris in nineteenth century New York City as we travel between the Upper East Side gilded mansions and Lower East Side slums and tenements as seen through the lens of progressive writer and reformer, Jacob Riis.
Jacob Riis’ 1898 tion “How the Other Half Lives” confronted the poverty and living conditions of New York’s Lower East Side. This course will weave together Riis’ biography as an immigrant who experienced similar conditions to those he eventually photographed as well as the gilded lives of the wealthy living a few miles uptown. Via the new technology of flash photography, Riis would eventually bring these two worlds together. Using many of his own images and words, as well as the Byron photographs of Gilded Age lavish parties and soirees, participants will have a front row seat to this fascinating history.
Led by New York City historian and museologist E.Y. Zipris, this illustrated seminar will explore how major urban reform in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century was ushered in via new flash photography . Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will travel along 5th Avenue to explore how the progressive era interacted with the gilded age.

Fabulous!

This was a fantastic introduction to Jacob Riis -- his life and his moral mission to help improve the lives of the immigrants who came and lived in extreme poverty in NYC. It included a fascinating depiction of t and the extreme poverty in NYC. An all-round fascinating lecture! I learned so much about Jacob Riis but also about NYC. E.Y. is an outstanding speaker/teacher. She is not only very knowledgable about her subject, she is very entertaining as well.
