Piedmont, in northwestern Italy, is famous worldwide for its prestigious red wines like Barolo and Barbaresco, made from the native Nebbiolo grape.  Come with us to discover these wines and others, including Barbera, Dolcetto, Gattinara, and Gavi, in this interactive wine tasting.

Winemakers of Piedmont, the region nestled between the Western Alps, the Apennines, and the Po River Valley, produce an astonishing fifty-nine different types of DOCG and DOC labels,  the top two tiers of Italian quality wines.  While the Nebbiolo grape is mentioned as early as 1268, our expert will focus on the modern history of Barolo from the mid-1800s until today.

Learn about the role that terrain and climate play in winemaking, as we discuss the main differences between robust Barolo and the lighter Barbaresco.  There are many other important red varietals native to Piedmont, and your expert will also talk about – and taste -  wines such as the medium-bodied Barbera and soft, fruity Dolcetto.

Though the Piedmont region is world-famous for its red wines, there are many quality white wines produced there with native varietals like Moscato Bianco (used in the Asti Spumante wines) as well as Arneis, Cortese, and Timorasso. Our expert will include a zingy Gavi with fruity and floral notes in this wine tasting.

The main focus of this seminar is wine tasting, and our expert will lead a guided tasting of six different wines – one white wine and five red wines (see Recommended Wines below for the full list). Our expert will include food pairing suggestions for each wine including local cheeses and traditional local dishes. We will also discuss how to select these wines at a restaurant or wine store with confidence, and which producers are worth seeking out. There will be time for questions at the end of this live seminar.

Led by a certified Italian sommelier, Rachel Erdman, this interactive seminar will provide an in-depth look at the wines of the Piedmont region. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the most important wines of this region, their characteristics and production methods, and tips for selecting these wines.

These are the wines that participants will be learning about and tasting with expert sommelier Rachel Erdman.
