Trentino-Alto Adige, on Italy’s northern border with Austria, produces spectacular white and red wines from a wide variety of native and international varietals. Come discover the top wines of this region like Gewürztraminer, Lagrein, and Teroldego in this interactive wine tasting seminar.

Alto Adige, or the Südtirol, is a land of heroic viticulture, with steeply terraced vineyards nestled in the hills and valleys below the majestic Dolomite mountains. Bolzano is the capital in this historic border area, home to many cooperatives of small wine producers, dating back to the Hapsburg Empire. It is here that we find (and discuss) splendid white wines such as Gewürztraminer and Pinot Bianco and robust reds including St. Magdalener and Lagrein.

Trentino forms the southern part of this region. Its capital, Trento, will be familiar to history buffs as the location of the Council of Trent in the 1500s. The wines here also have historical roots, including native varietals such as Schiava and Teroldego. We’ll learn how more recent innovations in wine have made this one of the most important areas for Italian sparkling wine, where the Trento DOC appellation is known for its spectacular Champagne-method wines.

The main focus of this seminar is wine tasting, and our expert will lead a guided tasting of six different wines – three white wines and three red wines (see Recommended Wines below for the full list). Our expert will include food pairing suggestions for each wine including local cheeses such as Vezzena and Puzzone di Moena, and cured meat specialties such as Speck. We will also discuss how to select these wines at a restaurant or wine store with confidence, and which producers are worth seeking out. There will be time for questions at the end of this live seminar.

Led by a certified Italian sommelier, Rachel Erdman, this interactive seminar will provide an in-depth look at the wines of the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the most important wines of this region, their characteristics and production methods, and tips for selecting these wines.

These are the wines that participants will be learning about and tasting with expert sommelier Rachel Erdman.

White Wines:

  • Trento DOC brut (Champagne-method sparkling wine)
  • Gewürztraminer (made in the dry Italian style)
  • Pinot Bianco (non-oaked style)

Red Wines:

  • St. Magdalener (also called Santa Maddalena)
  • Teroldego Rotaliano
  • Lagrein (the red version, not the rosé)

Participants may want to have a selection of cheeses of varying ages and charcuterie such as Speck or Prosciutto Crudo, along with bread or crackers, to pair with the wines.

Wonderful introduction to a less familiar subject!

Once again, Rachel offered an incredibly informative, clearly organized, and utterly enjoyable experience through this conversation. I am so excited to try these wines, and I feel so much better equipped to do so after this experience. Grazie infinite, Rachel! Bravissima!

A perfect 10!

Rachel's wine tastings are extraordinarily educational, wide ranging, beautiful and tasty but most of all...FUN! Even if you can't have exactly the same wine as she has in her glass, she engages people (we unmute!) about what they could find locally from the region. All 6 of these wines (I took the option to have her ship the wines from Italy) were excellent. Most of them are not available in my area but I have expanded my wine knowledge in a most delightful way. Rachel offers a social aspect not found in other Context offerings...we actually have conversations and I feel like I am getting to know her other loyal followers! It is a way to experience Italy as if I were there, which is currently impossible. And it has landed the region of "Trentino Alto Adige" at the top of my bucket list trips to Italy. I highly recommend taking anything that Rachel offers.

Another delightful tasting

Rachel's seminars are invariably informative, enlightening, and a lot of fun. In addition to learning about the wines, she suggests food and cheese pairings; she is a cheese expert in addition to a sommelier. Everyone joins in, so the seminars are as sociable as a virtual setting can offer, and a lot of fun.
