Dubrovnik is a popular destination on the Adriatic coast, but many visitors leave the area without fully experiencing another treasure of the region – the Islands of Dalmatia. With their rich cultural heritage and turbulent history, the islands along the Dalmatian coast present an opportunity to see some unforgettable sites and unique cultural expressions.

This lecture will introduce you to the eventful history of the region and provide the cultural context for its historical towns, churches, monasteries, and castles above the blue waters of the Adriatic. It’s especially fascinating to visit the hidden beaches, lagoons, and vineyards when you know that the area was also home to Mediterranean pirates who hid their treasures, as well as monks developing the first Slavic alphabet that can still be seen on the walls of Dalmatian churches, but is not used anywhere else in the world.

Led by an expert on the Balkans, Nina Wieda, this lecture will illuminate the fascinating history of the Dalmatian islands and provide context for its famous historical monuments and ruins. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased ability to appreciate and enjoy Dalmatia and its cultural heritage.
