Join us as we explore the magic of Irish art by spotlighting Ireland’s outstanding artistic achievements. We will begin with early passage graves (New Grange), then continue with a study of Medieval Irish art–including metal craft (Tara Brooch) and carvings (Irish High Crosses)–plus marvelous Irish manuscripts (Book of Kells and Lindisfarne Gospels).

Woven into this conversation are the stories of Saints Patrick and Brendan, the spread of Christianity in Ireland, and the arrival of the Vikings. Through the centuries, we will trace linear designs, interlace patterns, and animal decorations that remain alive and recognizably Irish today, from jewelry to traditional Irish sweaters. And we include suggestions for the best places to see these treasures–online and in person.

Led by Art Historian Jayne Yantz, this conversation celebrates the Golden Age of Irish art. Designed to inform curiosity and future travels, participants will come away with an increased appreciation for Irish ingenuity and artistic skill and an understanding that many contemporary Irish designs have ancient origins that are centuries old.

Jayne Yantz completed graduate work in art history and anthropology before beginning a career in college teaching. She specializes in non-Western art and European Old Masters, has traveled extensively to see the works of art she teaches, and believes it is important to continue learning throughout life. Jayne has received continued recognition for teaching excellence, including the Teacher of the Year award from her college. She currently lives in the New Jersey Pinelands on a nature preserve.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.

Very Pleased with The Presentation

Ms. Yantz demonstrated her extensive knowledge in the items discussed with enthusiasm and humor. Every photo presented on screen had a reason for inclusion, as well as was colorful. Her stories about Irish sweaters, the Muiredach High Cross and Bunratty Castle were entertaining. I especially enjoyed her description and history of cats carved in the High Cross. I will definitely watch for more of her discussions.
