Join a local architectural expert, author, and photographer as we explore some of the greatest dwellings of Charleston, South Carolina and learn more about the history of the city and its character. This is a wonderful seminar for anyone seeking an architectural introduction to Charleston.

Beginning with Drayton Hall, the first Palladian house constructed in America, completed in 1752, and the Miles Brewton House, considered the finest Georgian period dwelling in America, the lecture will also include houses in Federal, Greek Revival, and Italianate styles. The discussion of these structures, primarily house museums, will also include consideration of various approaches to preservation and restoration. We will conclude with historic homes that are private residences, demonstrating how the style lexicon of Charleston continues to shape and reflect the city’s unique way of life.

This architectural overview will offer insights into the history of the city, from its founding in 1690 through its eighteenth and nineteenth-century pinnacle of wealth, largely based on slave labor, through the Revolutionary War, Civil War, and aftermath, including the formation of the city’s preservation movement in the 1930s in a period known as the Charleston Renaissance.

Led by Susan Sully, author of 'The Allure of Charleston: From Classical to Contemporary Style', this interactive seminar aims to help participants to discover the architectural highlights of Charleston. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a greater understanding of both the splendor and history of Charleston.
