Shanghai (nicknamed ‘Paris of the East’ or ‘Pearl of the Orient’) has fascinated visitors for centuries. As a city where the West meets East, there’s a long and rich cultural history making it China's biggest city and an international global financial hub. This lecture will introduce participants to Shanghai as it is today as we trace its evolution and help plan for any future trip to this bustling metropolis.

This introductory lecture to Shanghai is an abbreviated version of the 3-part course on Shanghai, focussing on the astonishing rise, decline, and subsequent growth of Shanghai as a world city in the last three decades. We’ll touch upon a selection of crucial historical events that determined the establishment of Shanghai, such as the International Settlement and Former French Concession. We’ll also take time to focus on the present Shanghai; including travel tips on food, hotels, musea, culture, architecture, and guidance for future visits.

Led by an expert on architecture and urbanism, Bert de Muynck, this interactive seminar will introduce the city of Shanghai, as it is today. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of architecture, history, hotels, musea, and hospitality in China's largest metropolis.
