Copenhagen is one of Europe's oldest capitals with an exclusive royal touch - the monarchy in Denmark is the oldest in the world. Join a historian to discover Copenhagen’s royal streets, picturesque harbor, and the meaning of Danish hygge and happiness.

In this introduction to the city, we will enjoy Copenhagens' special atmosphere and visit classic destinations such as Tivoli Gardens, the Freetown Christiania, Rosenborg Castle, and the Little Mermaid. We’ll learn how the city is both historic yet youthful, so we will also pay visits to Nørrebro and the Meat Packing District in Vesterbro, where many visitors come to enjoy great Danish food. We’ll discuss the array of well-known Michelin starred restaurants, not forgetting the old fashioned Copenhagen lunch restaurants serving the traditional Danish open-faced sandwiches, smørrebrød.

Due to Copenhagen’s fascinating architecture, many parks, gourmet restaurants, etc. we’ll learn how the city is a very popular place to live and visit. We may touch on why it is often nominated as ‘The Best European City’ by several magazines for livability, sustainability, low crime, and other key factors.

Led by an expert on Danish history and culture, context guide, and local resident Kathrine G. Bjerregaard, this conversation will explore the many aspects that make Copenhagen so wonderful through photographs, videos, and maps. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased appreciation of Copenhagens’ past and present, sights, and gems.

Kathrine Bjerregaard holds a Masters degree in History and Philosophy. She began her career as an education officer at the Royal Collections before joining the academic staff at The National Museum of Denmark. For the past ten years, Kathrine has traveled throughout Scandinavia and Europe with Danish groups when not giving guided walks and visits to international visitors in Copenhagen or writing on her next book. Growing up in Luxembourg and Los Angeles with her Danish family and later in Copenhagen has given Kathrine a wide horizon and an American accent. Now living in Copenhagen with her family, she has a keen eye on the local scene and an acute understanding of Danish culture, mentality and history seen from the inside and outside. Kathrine can translate ‘hygge’ and tell tales from Danish history so you get it. Every tour is as individual as the group it is created for.
