Lisbon's Gulbenkian Museum: Highlights of International Art History with Estela Mendes
Can't make this time? A video recording will be sent to all participants after the seminar.
Housing one of the world’s largest collections of international art, Lisbon’s Museu Calouste Gulbenkian holds an array of treasures dating from Ancient Egypt to the 20th century. During this conversation, we will enjoy an introduction to the collections of Calouste Gulbenkian – who began collecting objects of intrigue at the age of 14 and grew up to become an Armenian oil tycoon with a personal affinity for fine art.
Together we will examine his collection of works, which include paintings by Degas, Rembrandt, Rubens, Monet, and a substantial collection of jewelry by René Lalique. We’ll also journey backward through time to discover masterpieces that have survived from all corners of the world. The museum displays ivories, paintings, sculptures, medals, manuscript books, and silver dining sets from Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Greek, Roman, Islamic, Armenian, Middle Eastern, and European art.
Calouste Gulbenkian's collection of works once adorned the halls of his personal houses or was lent to foreign museums. But today, his collection is cared for within the museum complex which bears his name – a must-see exhibition for any traveler in Lisbon.
Led by a local expert, our conversation will teach us about the history of the Gulbenkian Collections and Gardens – and how the museum came to be a garden oasis in the heart of present-day Lisbon.
