The Guggenheim Bilbao has been called "the greatest building of our time" (Philip Johnson). But, how did the Guggenheim Bilbao come about?
Hear about how this remarkable work of architecture came into being, what's inside, and the relationship between the building and the city of Bilbao in this seminar. This presentation introduces the third permanent Guggenheim Museum, including background on the decision to create the museum. If Guggenheim means art, what does Bilbao mean? Find out a little about the Basque city, and how the building and Bilbao have grown together.
The webinar talks about some of the characteristics that make the building unique, from its metallic sheen to an unusual relationship with the site. It also covers some of the names linked to the building, from the original Guggenheims -Solomon and Peggy- to the architect, Frank Gehry, who said of his museum that "it put Bilbao on the map, and I guess it put me on the map."
Led by an expert on modern and contemporary art, David Hosking, this interactive seminar will cover the past and present of the Guggenheim Bilbao. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of this remarkable museum.

David, originally from Scotland, has been living and guiding in Bilbao and northern Spain for many years. David is a published art historian, professional art educator and translator (he translated into English one of the standard guides to the architecture of Bilbao). He has a particular interest in the way the architecture of a city can tell its story, and has a passion for this endlessly curious part of the world.

Outstanding

I hope some day to travel to Bilbao to visit the Guggenheim Museum. In the meantime, I will depend on David's outstanding seminar ... so well presented and organized. David gave us a great understanding of the history and development of the Museum and then took us inside to view some of the collection. Terrific in every way!

Titanium in Bilbao

David Hosking immediately presented a "sense of place" with the early history of the Bilbao site and then linked the Guggenheim Museum to the Guggenheim family with just a few sentences. He then described the early career of Frank Gehry with the highlights that led to the dazzling design and play of light on the structure reflecting from the surface of Titanium. Just a few artists were highlighted in the collection. The lecture was perfectly balanced with just enough information to make me want to book my air travel to Bilbao. I loook forward to spending hours in the museum and walking by the river.
