From the dawn of civilization thousands of years ago, Greece’s ancient art has been one of the most important aspects of our world's history. Ancient Greek art contributed heavily in forming the character and aesthetics of the modern Western world. Works such as the abstract and mysterious Cycladic figurines, extraordinarily intricate Minoan seals & naturalistic colorful frescoes, dazzling golden Mycenaean death masks, enchanting Archaic Kores, imposing Classical statues of Gods & mortals, and the superb Parthenon Frieze among others will be analyzed in this seminar divided into two parts.

We will analyze world renowned artifacts displayed today in Greek Museums all over the country, belonging to every chronological period of Greece’s ancient timeline: from the 3rd Millennium BCE to the Classical and Hellenistic era. We'll start with an in depth analysis of materials, construction techniques, use, and possible meanings of each objet d'art in its specific archaeological, chronological and geographical context, and we'll further explore and unravel the society, culture, and world that created them.

Led by an expert on Ancient Greek Art, archaeologist, and certified tourist guide, Dimitra Pilarinou, this Conversation will explore Greek art of all historical periods and the respective social context. Designed for everyone from the curious to future travelers, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of Greek Art in antiquity and the foundation of the western world, as well as an appreciation for the masterpieces of Ancient Greek Art in museums and archaeological collections worldwide.

Dimitra Pilarinou is a Greek archaeologist and Licensed Tour Guide with a Masters degree in Prehistoric Archaeology of the Aegean. She has worked in excavations all around Greece, has given speeches on various topics in Seminars and Congresses, and has appeared on documentaries about the Minoans on History Channel and Travel Channel.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

Another excellent seminar with Dimitra Pilarinou! She is a natural teacher who weaves a thorough, informative and enlightening story of four historical periods through four pieces of art in this seminar, while also touching on geography, history, myths and religion, culture, artistic techniques and more. Highly recommended.
