Whether already a fan of Korea or are just beginning to know about this fascinating ethnic-nation, this lecture-conversation will get participants familiar with all the essential basics of its 2,000 years of history, the stages it evolved through to become the vibrant culture-exporting phenomenon it is today.

This will be a general overview structured by Professor Mason’s theory of this nation having enjoyed four distinct ""Golden Ages"" of strength, prosperity, and creation of great cultural treasures and the fourth one just started in 1988. The previous "Golden Ages" each lasted about 200 years, and in-between them were “Dark Ages” of suffering or stagnation, which yet still resulted in some great accomplishments we can visit. We will experience a fascinating journey through the long history of the several Korean dynasties and modern eras, as they developed within the Northeast Asian context, between China, Japan, and the Mongolia-Manchuria region.

We will be broadly introduced to the great scenic beauty of Korea’s many tourist sites, by a PowerPoint show of keywords, a few maps, and stunning original color photos of the official UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites associated with each era that is described. These include royal palaces and tombs, Buddhist temples and Confucian shrines, fortresses and castles, aristocratic villages, and ancient dolmen stones – all rich with artworks.

Led by a renowned expert on the History of Korean Spirituality and Cultural Tourism, Professor David A. Mason, this interactive seminar will serve as an all-rounded introduction to Korea. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a deeper understanding of why this country remains so treasured.

David A. Mason is a Michigan-born professor of Korean Cultural Tourism at Sejong University, Seoul Campus, and a longtime researcher on Northeast Asian History and the religious characteristics of Korea's mountains. He offers vivid tours with deep contextual insight and fascinating details, telling many old stories relevant to the sites, with warm humor. He has been an academic in South Korea since 1986, and also served as a consultant for the national Ministry of Sports, Culture and Tourism and the United Nations World Tourism Organization for five years. Mason earned a Masters' Degree in the History of Korean Religions from Yonsei University in 1997. He has authored and edited ten books on Korean culture and tourism.

Excellent Overview

David did an excellent job of simplifying the different time periods of Korea. It was easy to keep track. Even though I have experience with Korea I felt this helped me make sense of the different eras. Plus I learned some interesting new facts. I am looking forward to more Korea Talks in the future. Thank you for making this one available!

Great Overview of Korean History

David Mason presented a lot of history in a small amount of time, but it didn't feel rushed and I learned a lot. He clearly knows his stuff!

Great talk on Korea

David was a great instructor, very interesting and knowledgeable, and his talk was quite engaging. I learned a lot about Korea and appreciate his insights and perspective from having lived and studied there for so many years. I would definitely take another class from from him, and highly recommend this one.

A broad overview of the Golden Ages in Korea's history with emphasis on Unesco World Heritage sites was too rambling in the beginning and would have been more interesting with some exposure to some of the great artworks and textiles emerging during those periods. The building interiors were especially interesting.
