Description

A series of inter-disciplinary excursions led by cultural historian and musicologist Kate Bolton-Porciatti exploring the relationships between music, art, social and religious life in Italy’s most historic cultural centers. The seminars may be taken individually or as a series.

This seminar sets one of Italy’s greatest opera composers, Giacomo Puccini, in the social and cultural context of late 19th-century Tuscany.  Puccini came from a dynasty of church musicians who lived in the Tuscan city of Lucca; he was destined to follow in their footsteps as organist and choirmaster of the city’s cathedral. Becoming an opera composer was one of the many ways he broke with convention.

We follow in his footsteps from his birth house in Lucca to his home in the sleepy lakeside town of Torre del Lago.  Here, he mingled with locals, fishermen, and hunters, and he befriended a group of painters from the Tuscan ‘Macchiaioli’ school who were inspired by the light and landscapes around Torre del Lago.

Add to that Tuscan café life, convivial evenings playing the piano in the company of artists and Bohemians, and several amorous passions and you have all the stuff of a real-life opera.  Today, Torre del Lago is home to an annual Puccini Festival where Puccini's operas are staged in an open-air amphitheater overlooking the lake where the maestro would go boating and hunting waterfowl.

Led by an expert on Italian culture and music, Kate Bolton-Porciatti, this Conversation will reflect on Puccini's musical formation and his cultural milieu in Tuscany.  Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased appreciation of Italy's most romantic opera composer and the environment that nurtured his creativity.
