Antoni Gaudí is one of the most important architects in history. Join a Barcelona-based art historian to discover how Gaudi broke away from traditional thinking about design and construction and started an architectural revolution with a style that defies classification. We will explore nineteenth-century Barcelona and understand Gaudi's remarkable life and career in context.
We will start our story with a deep-dive into the lifestyles of the bourgeoisie of Barcelona and how their rising wealth influenced architecture. With the arrival of the Modernist movement, we will compare Gaudi to his peers around the world. Then, we will look at the works themselves as we wander Barcelona's picturesque streets and see the fantastical villas, public buildings, and of course, La Sagrada Familia. We will also learn about his deep Catholic faith and how this earned him the nickname "God's Architect".
Led by local Catalonian and art historian Biel Heredero, this interactive conversation will unpick the narrative of this fascinating architect, his life, and his connection with Barcelona. Designed to inform and inspire, we will emerge with increased knowledge and understanding of how Gaudí caused a revolution in architecture and engineering.
A native of Barcelona, Biel has a degree in Art History from the University of Barcelona, where he wrote his thesis on Catalan artists. He is active in the Barcelona art scene, and as a Catalan, he has tremendous knowledge of the region's history and culture.

Mr. Heredero does a wonderful job of providing background information on Barcelona and the changes in architecture that led to Gaudi's development. What look like whims in Gaudi's famous buildings turn out to be purposeful decisions he made with real meaning. Not to be missed.
Biel is knowledgeable, enthusiastic and passionate about Gaudi and Barcelona. The presentation was well organized with fascinating details about Gaudi's life, the social culture he lived in and how he developed his abilities and talent. As you might expect, there were many images to illustrate Gaudi's buildings. Thanks to Biel's presentation I now have a depth of understanding and appreciation of Gaudi and his work that I did not have before. This was my first Context Conversation, Gaudi in Context exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend it.
One of the most enjoyable Context "armchair" Tours Ive taken. Thoughtful organization of the material by the instructor provided just the introduction I was hoping for. Especially appreciated the placement of Gaudi's work in the context of Barcelona history, as well as contemporary art movements initially influencing his style. Also appreciated the time taken to illustrate key stylistic details that make Gaudi's work so unique.
I look forward to other presentations from Mr. Heredero.
