2021 marks the 60th anniversary of the historic flight of Soviet astronaut Yuri Gagarin, the first human to travel to outer space. A triumph for the USSR’s space program, the Vostok 1 mission was groundbreaking. But the road to the stars began long before 1961: the great Soviet space program would not have succeeded without a deep mystical fascination with space. The seminar is dedicated to this unexpected aspect of the Russian space odyssey.

We start with retracing the milestones in the great space exploration of the Soviets: Sputnik, the first animals in space, the famed “Vostok” spacecraft, and Gagarin's legendary flight. Then, we will go back to the late nineteenth century cosmism movement which originated with the mystical works of Nikolai Feodorov. It was his ideas about outer space as the territory of immortal life that kick-started the Soviet space program by influencing its key participants. Finally, we will delve into the artistic quest for the possibility of life on remote planets: from Soviet kinetic art to space-inspired architecture and design of the 1960s and beyond.

Led by St. Petersburg-based best-selling author and researcher in Soviet architecture, Vladimir Ivanov, this interactive seminar explores the ultimate power of dreams in space exploration. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of the Soviet space program, as well as the philosophy and arts surrounding it.

Holding an MA in Classics, Vladimir is an author of a book called “Inspired by outer space: images of the future in late Soviet architecture” and a key contributor to TASCHEN's edition "CCCP: Cosmic Communist Constructions Photographed". Vladimir has written articles on contemporary art for local media, done podcasts on photography and the Russian revolution. He has also curated a number of exhibitions, including "The Cradle of the Faith: Christian Presence in the Middle East" in New Michael Palace and "Lingua Sacra" in the Imperial Public Library. Currently, he is doing architectural walks in St Petersburg and shares his vast knowledge of arts through the tours of the Hermitage and Russian museums.

A good try but a miss...

I felt sorry for the presenter; clearly he tried but was given an assignment not in his area of expertise. It was a nice try but just not up to the standards of other fare you have had. Not asking for a refund but suggest experiments be heavily discounted next time. I learned next to nothing. Do you preview the product before releasing?

60th anniversary of Gagarins space flight

My father, husband and I were traveling in Russia in October, 1961. We had the wonderful experience of being in Kiev and our guide took us to a documentary of Gagarinand Totov's pioneering space flights and the history of the russian's experience with space. I was so looking forward to have that history renewed for me and to remember that ! What a night that was in Kiev! I didn't speak russian but the documentary was understandable . I was not expecting a talk about Russia's early "Science fiction" philosophers! I wanted a history of Russian Space flight! Needless to say I was really dissapointed!!!
