Join a local social historian as we trace the origins of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, from its indigenous history through to its colonial past, its association with slavery, the Independence movement, and the modern Rio we know of today. This seminar offers a comprehensive introduction to the history of the ‘Cidade Maravilhosa’ or “Marvellous City”.

As we begin with the indigenous history, we’ll learn how in the sixteenth century there were around five million people living in Brazil’s vast territory, spread out through more than 2,000 indigenous groups. Today, the indigenous population contains less than 300,000 people. As we look at some of the architectural treasures of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, we will also understand how the city and the land were forged by the millions of slaves brought in from Africa. We’ll discuss how African culture is deeply embedded in Brazil, the last country in the world to abolish slavery.

The city’s direct relationship with Portugal and Europe will also be seen as we continue through downtown Rio. We’ll learn how In 1808 the entire Portuguese court fled to Brazil as Napoleon’s troops marched towards Lisbon. King João VI and his family established themselves in Rio, undertook major changes, and set the country into a new international context. We’ll move on to discussing Brazilian independence in 1822, the birth of a republic in 1889, and the crowning of Rio at its capital. We’ll discuss major political, social, urban, and architectural developments that appeared in the twentieth century and can still be seen today. The 1960s also witnessed extraordinary cultural achievements highlighted in the visual arts, cinema, literature, and music, such as bossa nova. We end our brief comprehension of Rio through its cultural history by learning about the military dictatorship period, re-democratization in the 1980s, and how the city lives and feels today.

Led by an expert on Rio’s history, Dr. Andreas Valentin, this interactive seminar will transport you through the history of Rio de Janeiro. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of this beautiful Latin American destination.

A terrific program! Andreas was totally well-informed, very enthusiastic and extremely well-prepared, with many maps, diagrams, paintings, drawings, photographs and videos to enrich his program. He answered all our questions expansively. He said he might prepare another program about the Amazon River region, and I hope he will, sign me up!
