This seminar will take us back to the ancient Mediterranean world, where we will start our exploration of the history of food culture on the Italian peninsula. By looking at the social and historical context, we will understand the evolution of Italian food and how Italian regional cuisines have developed over time.

We will start by learning how food and wine were produced, prepared, and consumed in the ancient world. During our conversation, we will understand that having a meal in the ancient Mediterranean was not just a simple act of nourishment but a particular way of interacting with others. Etruscans, Phoenicians, Greeks, and Romans used food as a central part of social and ceremonial life. We will consider everyday meals and how they were prepared and enjoyed, including standard norms regarding table manners, necessary utensils, and cooking techniques. Then, we will learn about public feasts, symposia and banquets, and the role of food and wine in these formal settings. We will look at the relationship between food and wine and ancient deities and even share some old recipes!

We will use literature, art, and archaeological finds to better understand the importance of food and wine in ritual and everyday life in the ancient world in what is now Italy. It is no small matter that many ancient wine-producing areas are the most reputable ones in the modern wine industry!

Led by an expert on food and wine, Daniela Mendola, this interactive seminar will be a unique opportunity to be immersed in ancient Mediterranean culture. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with increased knowledge and appreciation for the historical and social context in which Italian regions were born, and which is at the basis of today’s Mediterranean food and wine culture.
