This was my first Context talk - and a pleasure. Jennie is clearly an experienced and personable speaker, and manages to bring that to the online platform (not always an easy feat). Her slides were gorgeous and well-described. My eight-year old son even sat with me and enjoyed the content! I cannot recommend this lecture enough, and imagine Jennie brings her expertise and excitement to all of her talks.
Years ago, I saw a picture of the EUR Palazzo della Civilta Italiana and remember being oddly drawn to it even as it unsettled me — the same feeling I get when I look at any of De Chirico’s surrealist paintings, with their references to classical form that seem slightly askew. Jennie’s lecture had more than answered any questions I had about those particular works produced in Fascist-era Italy, but her presentation also made me want to know more about the many other aesthetic objects and ephemera made in that time. (I’m a font nerd, and she even discussed typefaces!) It was a well-paced, incredibly informative talk that covered so much ground. Thank you for one of the best online learning experiences I’ve had in these past seven months!
Jennie is not only an expert on the material she presented, but made the subject really come alive. I loved her use of a myriad of examples through photos of artwork, buildings and propoganda material. I came into this lecture with very little knowlege of the subject, but came away with lots of great information and curiousity to learn more. I especially appreciate the suggestions for films to watch in regard to this period, as well as the reading list. I look forward to attending future seminars with Jennie Hirsch. Bravissima!
Jennie is a very knowledgeable expert presenting the material in an efficient manner suitable to the time allotted. She brought together many aspect of culture as well as more contemporary looks at the time through books and film.
