Domenikos Theotokopoulos is widely known as El Greco (The Greek) and constitutes one of the most unique cases of Great Masters of the Late Renaissance and Mannerism movement. In his 73 years, he traveled to the great artistic centers of his time, studied with the Giants, like Titian and Tintoretto, continuously evolving his unique personal style: an unprecedented style, ahead of his time that would puzzle his contemporaries with bold combinations, a unique use of color, light and the expressive distortions of the human body. Those same artistic oddities would entrall artists like Eugène Delacroix, Édouard Manet, Paul Cezanne, and Pablo Picasso in the centuries to come.

In this seminar we will analyze his life and work from his beginnings in Venetian Crete all the way to Toledo in Spain where he spent most of his lifetime. Led by an expert on History & Archaeology, Dimitra Pilarinou, this Conversation will explore El Greco's life and work trajectory. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of history of art in the late Renaissance period.

Dimitra Pilarinou is a Greek archaeologist and Licensed Tour Guide with a Masters degree in Prehistoric Archaeology of the Aegean. She has worked in excavations all around Greece, has given speeches on various topics in Seminars and Congresses, and has appeared on documentaries about the Minoans on History Channel and Travel Channel.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.

El Greco

The speaker did a great of setting the historical context from which El Greco emerged and artists that influenced him. She was also very good at pointing out distinctions in his paintings. Having just visited Spain with guides who have their PhD in art history, she provided insights that were at a similar level. Thoroughly enjoyed it. And totally love El Greco
