Once a tiny independent city-state and major trade player, today Dubrovnik is a prosperous tourist heaven. The story about Dubrovnik is a story about how wits and intelligence managed to beat the brute force of its surroundings and enabled it to prosper through centuries. This conversation will steer participants through the timeline of Dubrovnik's turbulent history adding stories, curiosities, and explanations throughout the 90 minutes, as well as information and tips for visiting Dubrovnik in the future.
Our conversation will place Dubrovnik in historical context, with a presentation of the “Land of Honey and Blood” (the Balkans), the arrival of the Slavic tribes, and how they mixed with the indigenous population and became an autonomous commune of Dubrovnik. We will follow the dynamic growth of the city from the seventh century onwards as we trace the history of clashes of different cultures, civilizations, and religions. We’ll discuss how the timeline of the Dubrovnik Republic crosses paths with Byzantium, Venetian Republic, Serbian, Ottoman, Spanish, and French Empires.
This conversation will also address Dubrovnik's power distribution, its politics, its world-known diplomacy, its trade, and architecture but also its people, customs, and other interesting events that took place along the way (like the great Earthquake of 1667). We will end the historical part with a short twenty-first century summary including the Croatian War (1991-1995) that unfortunately affected Dubrovnik as well.
In an updated version of this seminar, the second half will focus on information and tips on visiting Dubrovnik today. When should visitors make the trip? What are the best sites? What gastronomic delicacies and wines should be tasted? This seminar will answer those questions and point out all other must-dos when visiting Dubrovnik and its surroundings.
Led by a local expert on Dubrovnik’s history, participants will emerge with a greater understanding of this intriguing and stunning Croatian city. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will emerge with a historical context as well as insider tips for a Dubrovnik trip.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.
Ivo provided a robust, hour long recap of the historical shifts that impacted Dubrovnik and made it what it is today. This context was very useful for this destination.
Ivo did an excellent job presenting an overview of Dubrovnik. He explained just enough history to understand the development of Dubrovnik over time, never dwelling too long on a topic. I especially enjoyed his presentation about the specialization in certain areas (oysters, wine, national park). His overview was interesting for the duration of the session. My family and I are visiting the area in June. We cannot wait!
Very much enjoyed Ivo's lecture on Dubrovnik. Informative and interesting with its rich history. Thank you!
I know nothing about Croatia, but I learned a lot during the seminar. Ivo shared the history of Croatia and lots of tips about visiting. He is a congenial host and I hope to visit there someday!
Instructor Ivo was interesting and knowledgeable. Will definitely look for more classes from him. Thanks
