Can't make this time? A video recording will be sent to all participants after the seminar.

This seminar is an introduction to the world of Tango, a musical genre that emerged from the poor neighborhoods of Buenos Aires and in a few decades became one of the most relevant art forms of the 20th century.

We will listen to the instruments that make up an "orquesta típica" and observe the main steps that constitute its unusual dance. Not exclusively for musicians and dancers, this seminar will also explore the cultural and historical elements behind this expressive art form. We will review the different periods from the origins of Tango to the present discussing the various traditions that have influenced this genre. We will try to understand the social fabric and how and why this genre of music and dance developed in Argentina and Uruguay. We will analyze the role of men and women, not only in the dance itself, but also the underlying gender issues in the culture of Tango.

Led by lecturer, researcher and musician Juan Cruz Alterini, this seminar includes images, audio files, videos and the analysis of lyrics to explore the complex universe of this hybrid genre. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of tango culture, which will allow them to read between the lines the history of Buenos Aires itself.

Juan Cruz Alterini has a university degree in design, and is completing another one in music. He has traveled through four continents and speaks as many languages. Currently, he teaches at the National University of Buenos Aires, and plays violin in the local youth symphonic orchestra. Juan has participated in research projects about the history of the first half of the XIX century in Argentina and has worked in two vastly different cultural institutions: the Colón opera house and a center of contemporary art. Juan's diverse experiences has given him the possibility of understanding both the urban evolution of the city and the idiosyncrasies of the nation, as well as its models of behavior and beauty, its expectations, and its fears.
