Diocletian was one of the longest-reigning Emperors and the first in Roman history to abdicate. He retired to his province of Dalmatia in his imperial palace from which the city of Split was born. This conversation will serve as an introduction to Split with a focus on the splendid Diocletian’s Palace.

The greatness of the Roman Empire is evident in many areas of civilization and has become an inexhaustible source and model for generations worldwide in culture, construction, science, statesmanship, military skills, and many other fields. Many notable figures and peoples throughout history contributed to the rise and power of the Roman Empire as did many to its disappearance.

One of the most brilliant defenders of the Empire and Roman virtues was the Dalmatian Diocles, whose military skills brought him to the imperial throne in 284 AD. Under his Tetrarchy system, he ruled successfully for twenty years then abdicated and retired to his imperial palace in the province of Dalmatia. Located next to his palace were sulfur springs which assisted him in his recovery and were utilized by successors and are still actively used today. In 1979 Diocletian's Palace was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site and houses the second oldest Cathedral in the world, an outstanding complex of substructures, Roman Temples, and an impressive medieval settlement within its walls. His imperial palace is the foundation of the city of Split and for over 1700 years has been a living and breathing palace, serving as an inspiration for all.

Led by an expert in local history, Ante Batarelo, this interactive seminar will present Diocletian's Imperial Palace and Split. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of antiquity and Mediterranean Split.

Ante Batarelo was born & raised in Sydney, Australia to Croatian parents. He has a degree from Zagreb University and for the last 30 years has been living in Croatia and happily married with 5 children. He's done an array of jobs from university lecturing, translation, and tour guiding. His other loves are history, the outdoors, and hiking.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

Diocletians Palace - Split

I very informative talk that gave me a realPicture of who Diocletian was - and I was surprised! Rome sounded very lawless during that time and murder was a way of life! And it needed a strong leader - but life was cheap!

Split and Diocletian's Palace

Excellent presentation and historical overview on the city of Split and the palace of Diocletian. I especially appreciated the videos of the various parts of the palace. and the adjacent, touristic avenues of Split itself.
