Michelangelo's David towers over a long line of artworks that represent this complex and multi-faceted Biblical figure: an adolescent boy turned Herculean hero, a shepherd-king, poet-musician, lover and killer, bereaved friend and bereft father. David's passions and sorrows, flaws, and scars, make him the most human of creatures, and his many faces mirror all humanity - including Michelangelo himself.
Kate Bolton-Porciatti leads a virtual visit to the Accademia Gallery in Florence, to see David alongside Michelangelo's poignant "Slaves" - raw and elemental works that reveal the sculptor's tool marks and illuminate his process and technique. We will see how the young Florentine genius conquered the monolithic block of marble nicknamed "The Giant" - a challenge which two previous sculptors had attempted and relinquished - and why his David subsequently became a universal symbol of liberty and civilization.
We will also reflect on images of David dating back a thousand years before Michelangelo, to set his work in its historical, social, and artistic context.

Kate Bolton-Porciatti is a professor of Italian cultural history and music at the Istituto Lorenzo de'Medici in Florence, where she teaches BA and MA courses in the humanities. She also lectures at the British Institute, Florence, and at the Chigiana Music Academy in Siena. Kate has published extensively as an academic and a journalist; she is a music critic for BBC Music and a travel writer for The Daily Telegraph, UK. Before moving to Italy permanently in 2005, she was a senior producer and broadcaster for BBC Arts & Classical Music in London and has won prestigious Jerusalem and Sony Awards for her programs. She did her M.Phil. thesis in Italy, exploring the musical culture of early Renaissance Florence.

Michelangelo's David revealed

An excellent Conversation! Kate Bolton-Porciatti situates this magnificent work and its artist in the Florence of its time, but only after examining the Biblical and historical parallels in other art forms. She nimbly uses her computer camera to point out details and zoom in on specific parts of the sculpture -- among the best uses of the Zoom medium I've seen in a Context Conversation. Highly recommended!

So informative!

This was such a great seminar! There was so much to learn about Michelangelo’s David in terms of biblical history, influences on the artist, and history of the sculpture itself. Really a great presentation too.
