Join Danish historian Kathrine G. Bjerregaard to explore the Danish Riviera along Denmark’s North Sealand coast, where beautiful beaches and spectacular castles are abundant. Here you can enjoy UNESCO protected nature, stunning landscapes, cute fishing villages, old beach hotels, and excellent museums combined with endless sandy beaches. Both locals and visitors enjoy the world-famous Louisiana Museum of Modern Art and the traditional thatched cottages and gourmet restaurants along the coastal road to scenic, old villages and towns like Hellebæk, Gilleleje, Helsingør, and Hillerød.

Three of Denmark’s most spectacular castles lie here: Frederiksborg Castle is called Denmark’s Versailles. Another striking example is Fredensborg Palace with its Baroque Gardens and the Valley of the Norsemen. And not least the UNESCO World Heritage site Kronborg Castle, widely known for being the set of Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

The Danish Riviera is not just a smart catchphrase for North Sealand’s coast. Neither is it a modern attempt to market the area. Instead, it defines the younger history of the area and the tradition of the seaside holidaying that first became popular among the upper classes and the cultural elites in the middle of the nineteenth century. Locals still talk about the painter P.S. Krøyer and his circle of friends as some of the first tourists hereabouts. They were attracted by the sea, landscapes, and bright light and created an artistic collective, which after some time, moved further North and became known as The Skagen Painters. Today, these cultural beginnings of tourism and the wonderful countryside continue to attract many visitors who spend their holidays on the coast of North Sealand, all along the Danish Riviera.

Led by Kathrine G. Bjerregaard, an expert on Danish and Scandinavian history and culture, this interactive seminar will look at idyllic fishing villages, beaches, and two UNESCO World Heritage Sites along the coast of North Sealand, from the suburbs of Copenhagen to Kronborg Castle in Elsinore. Designed to inform curiosity and future travels, participants will come away with increased knowledge and understanding of the local history, art, and culture you can experience North of Copenhagen, Denmark.

Kathrine Bjerregaard holds a Masters's degree in History and Philosophy. She began her career as an education officer at the Royal Collections before joining the academic staff at The National Museum of Denmark. For the past ten years, Kathrine has traveled throughout Scandinavia and Europe with Danish groups when not giving guided walks and visits to international visitors in Copenhagen or writing on her next book. Growing up in Luxembourg and Los Angeles with her Danish family and later in Copenhagen has given Kathrine a wide horizon and an American accent. Now living in Copenhagen with her family, she has a keen eye on the local scene and an acute understanding of Danish culture, mentality and history seen from the inside and outside. Kathrine can translate ‘hygge’ and tell tales from Danish history so you get it. Every tour is as individual as the group it is created for.
