With over twenty million Twitter followers, the Dalai Lama has a higher online following than the Pope. Despite his latter-day superstardom, the true origin of the title in 1391 and His Holiness’s evolved role within Tibetan Buddhism is vastly misunderstood. For example, many assume that the Dalai Lama is a religious leader – a sort of Buddhist Pope. But unlike the Pope (who claims authority over every priest and prelate in Christendom) the Dalai Lama has no jurisdiction over any other lama or monk, yet his influence spans the entire socio-economic strata of East Asia.  This seminar will examine the role of the Dalai Lama as we learn more about this intriguing religious leader.

The current Dalai Lama (the fourteenth) has sat on the throne for more than eight decades. Upon His recognition as the newest incarnation of Dalai Lama at the age of four, his life has been on a straight course towards celebrity. He was even faced with exile at one point -- cancel culture is not new. As we trace the tumultuous life story of His Holiness, our expert will illuminate the Dalai Lama in the context of rampant spiritual and political rivalry across the Himalayas -- a region where oracles and prophecy continue to play a major role in daily life and policymaking

Led by a historian who has known the Dalai Lama personally for more than thirty years, this interactive seminar will illuminate the present Dalai Lama’s astonishing odyssey from an isolated Tibetan village to acclaim as, arguably, the world’s greatest moral leader of the twenty-first century. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of this sacred title, the transformative journey of its fourteenth member, and the enormous political influences he holds across East Asia.

Alexander Norman has known the Dalai Lama personally for more than thirty years and was a ghost-writer of three of the Dalai Lama’s own bestselling books, including the autobiography Freedom in Exile. He brings unrivaled personal knowledge and insight into the history and personalities of one of the world’s most complex and profound cultural traditions. His new biography of the Dalai Lama is a New York Times Book Review editor’s pick and has been published in multiple editions and languages. The author Educated at the University of Oxford, Alexander Norman has his BA in Philosophy and Theology and a Master’s degree in Oriental Studies. He is a past winner of the Duns Scotus prize for medieval philosophy and is the author of an acclaimed history of the Dalai Lamas: Secret Lives of the Dalai Lamas: The Untold Story of the Holy Men Who Shaped Tibet, from Pre-History to the Present Day.
