Follow the history of the Cuban struggle for independence from Spain in the nineteenth century and from US influence throughout its period of independence in 1902 with a Cuban-born historian.

This seminar will focus on the ideological struggles to define what Cuba was, what Cuban identity meant, and what the means for today. Dr. Ruiz will focus on the construction of a Cuban identity vis-à-vis the influence of the US in the development of Cuba’s economic, political, and material culture. We will examine closely two distinct periods: from independence to 1959 (pre-revolutionary Cuba) and then following the outlines of Cuba’s revolutionary present (1959 to today). We’ll learn how one can see the enduring continuity of Cuba’s political life and its present state. We’ll leave time in the Q & A period to discuss Cuba’s present conditions and possible futures.

Led by historian Dr. Teofilo Ruiz, this interactive seminar will deepen participants’ knowledge of the pursuit of freedom by the Cubans through history. Designed to inform curiosity and future travels, we will emerge with a greater understanding of the struggles in Cuba’s political and ideological timeline from 1868 through to today.

Teo F. Ruiz, PhD is a Cuban-American medieval historian and a Distinguished Research Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama. He is the author of 15 books.

Lots of good information. Most of it is not new to me, and yet, the way in which Teofilo puts it together clarifies and helps me make sense of connections between events. Thanks for a great seminar.
