After the "Salvator Mundi" was sold by Christie's Auction House in 2017 for a whopping $450 million, hardly anyone outside the art world had any idea that the majority of this work was painted just a decade ago.

Case studies such as the Sistine Chapel, the Last Supper, and The Girl with the Pearl Earring will show us how art restorations and conservations can totally change our view and idea about works of art, often radically altering the way we understand a work or an artist.

Leonardo da Vinci's "Salvador Mundi" and other noteworthy tales of art conservation and restoration will be discussed in this seminar by Sabry Amroussi, an art historian and writer also involved in the art trade – where dull brown paintings often turn into glorious masterpieces after cleaning. Designed to inspire curiosity and future travel, this seminar will prepare participants for future in-person visits to experience these remarkable masterpieces.

Sabry Amroussi is an art historian and writer living and working in Amsterdam. He specializes in the art of the Dutch Golden Age, mainly in the works of Rembrandt and his school, and has a keen interest in the Jewish history of Amsterdam. He lectures and teaches on both subjects and gives art historical tours all across Europe. As a true omnivore when it comes to art, culture, and even cuisine, he has worked with and for major museums and collectors, such as the LACMA, Rijksmuseum, van Gogh Museum and the P de Boer collection in Amsterdam. As a guide for Context, he is eager to share this knowledge in real life, always with a big scoop of humor, ofter intermingling art with social life, cuisine, and history.

Fascinating!

As always, Sabry brings a great enthusiasm to every lecture and this was no exception. Very interesting to learn more about the restoration process, when things go right and especially when things go very wrong.

Interesting and informative on conservation

This seminar was extremely well thought out. Of course we all know about art conservation, but what about when it goes wrong? Sometimes horribly wrong, but other times perhaps even well meaning attempts change the art or the artist's original intent. It was beneficial to have Sabry's expertise here to further develop this topic, and his choice of artwork to illustrate the point was excellent.

This was one of the best (and most entertaining) courses I've taken. Sabry has some pretty amazing art conservation tales to tell!
