This seminar, which is based in part on an international exhibition curated by the speaker at the San Antonio Museum of Art, explores the unique role of jade in Chinese culture.

Spanning the Neolithic period to modern times, jade has been prized in China for it’s spiritual and protective qualities. Jade was praised by Confucius for the material’s virtuous characteristics of clarity, durability and unrivaled value. The various stones that comprise the category of jade and the major art historical periods of the material will be illustrated with a wide variety of objects from some of the world’s greatest collections.

Led by an expert on Chinese ceramics and decorative arts, John Johnston, this interactive seminar will explore the long history of jade. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of this stone and its importance in Chinese history and culture.

Dr. John Johnston earned his PhD in art history from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He is a specialist in Chinese ceramics and decorative art and traditional Buddhist art. Dr. Johnston served as Curator of Asian Art at the San Antonio Museum of Art and other American museums and was an Assistant Professor at the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong. Dr. Johnston has lived in Asia for many years including five years in Greater China and three years of art historical fieldwork in Bhutan.

Chinese Jade

A review and exposition of historical and artistic aspects of Chinese jade

Disappointing

Content: Interesting, but perhaps too broad for the allotted time.
Presentation: Mechanical, flat. For the most part, Dr, Johnston just read the text from the slides he used (PowerPoint sin #1). The few times he branched off from his notes, his enthusiasm came through and I became interested.
Technical: the audio dragged and accelerated throughout the recording.
