Join local expert Elton Caushi as we are transported to a place that no longer exists: a communist Albania. Based on the memory of his childhood and youth in Albania, this seminar will explore Albania in the 1970s onwards by blending historical accounts and personal narrative. Elton will make participants both laugh and cry as he regales tales of political instabality, gulag family holidays, authoritarian education, and more in this personal memoir of life in communist Albania.

This is a narrative of a young boy’s childhood and adolescence in a world that has almost vanished today. Family photos and childhood memories will be used to illustrate this lecture as Elton describes the memorable experience of growing up in a Stalinist country. We’ll learn of a childhood surrounded by bunkers, slogans and stories of spies, partisans, enemies and heroes everywhere. We’ll hear of the city of Tirana with its distinct lack of cars, we’ll explore stories of forbidden chocolate and chewing gum, and of national mourning when Albania’s dictator, Enver Hoxha died.

Led by a local guide and expert on Albania, Elton Caushi, this interactive seminar will focus on life and youth in a former communist Albania. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased awareness of what life in Albania was like before the Revolution, that will help them grasp the Albania of today.

Elton Caushi, a native Albanian, works in development and travel in Albania and the surrounding region of the Balkans. He has a Master's degree in Development Economics and International Development from the Institut Universitaire des Etudes de Developpement of Geneva, Switzerland.

Excellent Presentation.

This was such an interesting presentation. The focus on both the history of Albania and Elton’s personal family experiences really enhanced the experience. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would definitely take another of his courses. Just excellent.
