Chinese New Year (also known as Lunar New Year) is certainly the most important festival on the traditional Chinese calendar. Join us for a virtual celebration for the Chinese New Year, and gain insights into the history and traditions of the most important Chinese festival.

It is commonly referred to as the Spring Festival, which marks the end of the winter season and the beginning of the spring season. It is also celebrated over the world in places with significant Chinese populations, such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, as well as the Chinese communities in North America and Europe.

This seminar begins by tracing the origins and tales of the Chinese New Year back to ancient China. We then talk about the relationship of the festival with the lunisolar Chinese calendar and horoscope. We will then gain insights into the local customs, festivities, and practices in modern Hong Kong and China. From the preceding days to the fifteenth day of the festival, we learn about what should we do and avoid doing, and what happens at home and in the community. What bring you good luck and which are bad? What decorations and plants should you put in your house? What should you cook and eat? Lastly, we will also talk about how the festival is celebrated in some other Asian countries, and how the festivities have changed in the modern digitalized world.

Led by a Hong Kong resident and local tour guide, Adrian Cheng, this interactive seminar will provide a general introduction to Chinese New Year traditions and celebrations. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of this important festival.
