The city-state of Milan (known as the Duchy of Milan from 1395) was one of Europe’s most important political forces in the 1300s - 1400s. Ruled first by the House of Visconti and then by the House of Sforza, Milan was strategically located and often at the center of regional political strife. During this seminar, lead by an expert on military architecture, we will look closely at how Milan’s power was expressed in its fortified buildings and castles.

Our exploration will start inside the city walls with a look at the Visconti family and how they dominated all other political factions thanks to their use of fortifications. Then we will move outside the city to see how castles were used to protect the territory from external enemies and project the power of the Visconti on the lands they controlled beyond the city walls. We will look at Brescia’s urban fortifications, Rocca d’Angera on lake Maggiore, and the Royal Castle of Pavia.

We will then learn about the arrival of the House of Sforza and how the function of castles changed during their rule. We will also discuss the technical evolution of warfare in the 1400s and how this was reflected in the architectural works designed and built under the Sforzas. The Sforza Castle will figure prominently in our discussion, as will the Cassano d’Adda, the Soncino Castle near Cremona and the mountain fortress of Bellinzona, Switzerland.

We cannot talk about Italian military architecture without mentioning Leonardo da Vinci and his work as a military engineer who introduced radical innovations that foreshadowed the future of all European military constructions. We will look at Locarno and Sarzanello as case studies.

Led by an expert on military architecture, Giacomo Zavatteri, this interactive seminar will discuss Castles in the Duchy of Milan. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of this exciting topic.
