Can't make this time? A video recording will be sent to all participants after the seminar.

Join lecturer and recitalist Peter Medhurst from his music room in London for a series of conversations that will spotlight the prodigal musical talent which has stemmed from the great capital cities of Venice, Berlin, and Vienna across the ages. Illustrated with musical examples, this interactive series is designed to be enjoyed one at a time, or as part of a longer conversation with like-minded music enthusiasts.

Our third installment explores Berlin’s cultural arts heritage through a historical lens. Since the fall of its famous wall in 1989, Berlin has emerged as one of the most dynamic, and vibrant cities in the world, with an economy based on high-tech firms and the service sector.  However, it also has a rich cultural heritage of museums, art galleries, and concert halls, along with an opera house that has been in continuous use since 1742.

With music to the fore, Peter Medhurst explores the history, the architecture, and the art of this Cinderella of capital cities.  Composers include CPE Bach, Frederick the Great, CM von Weber, and F. Mendelssohn. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an understanding of what it is that gives Venice its unique sound. This conversation is part of a musical series with Peter Medhurst.

Each session is designed as a stand-alone seminar as well as part of the series. We invite you to also explore:

  • Capital Cities in Music: Venice with Peter Medhurst
  • Capital Cities in Music: Vienna with Peter Medhurst

Peter Medhurst appears in the UK and abroad as musician and scholar, giving recitals and delivering illustrated lectures on music and the arts. He studied composition and early keyboard instruments at the Royal College of Music in London, and singing with Erik Werba at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. He is known today for his lecture-recital work which has taken him to Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, as well as to all the major cities in Europe. He lectures for The Arts Society, The National Trust, and The Art Fund. Peter also leads tours abroad to places like Venice, Rome, Berlin, Vienna, and Madrid, and as part of the time spent exploring these places he gives organ recitals on the historic instruments in the various cathedrals and churches.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.

This was a wonderfully unique tour of Berlin

I have done several tours of Berlin, and I’ve been there many times. However, this tour was particularly fascinating because of its focus on the arts in Berlin as well as the city. The tour, as well as the musical excerpts, and some of the history that also included art, was wonderful and interesting and informative.

An Instructive Look at Berlin

Peter Medhurst could, as the saying goes, make reading the phone book interesting. As always, he brings out interesting background information on a large number of buildings and areas in Berlin.

This was probably the most enlightening lecture I have taken with Context. An upcoming trip will be 100% enhanced thanks to this brilliant presentation.
