Japan is famous for its iconic cherry blossoms, but it's not the only flower to capture the country's imagination. From snow-covered camellias in winter to hydrangea in the summer heat, from spring's delicate wisteria to the mysterious spider lilies of autumn, there is much more to Japan's flower calendar than simply sakura.

In this seminar, we'll explore a year's worth of Japan's most beloved blooms. Hear the myths, history, and cultural connections of certain species. What flower would a samurai add to their bath? What bloom is known as "the corpse flower"? What food is often served in the shape of a chrysanthemum?

Led by travel expert, Tokyo tour guide, and writer, Mandy Bartok, this interactive seminar is designed to inform curiosity, inspire future travels, and explore the hanakotoba, or unique ‘language of flowers’ so ingrained in Japanese culture. Participants will come away with an increased appreciation for Japanese flower culture beyond the popular cherry blossom.

Mandy Bartok originally hails from the US but has lived in Japan since 2008. She has written for the travel section of the Japan Times, the nation's leading English language newspaper, and various other print and online publications. She has also worked as a travel consultant for several of Japan's regional governments and travel bureaus. Her true passion, however, is leading tours to Tokyo's undiscovered neighborhoods and teasing out the stories of the dynamic and captivating city she is fortunate to call home.
