Can't make this time? A video recording will be sent to all participants after the seminar.

This seminar traces Bernini’s substantial imprint on the city of Rome – from monumental sculpture inside St. Peter’s Basilica to the exterior colonnade, and his gorgeous Roman fountains.
Gian Lorenzo Bernini, one of the founders of the Italian Baroque and one of the world’s most gifted sculptors, helped craft the look and feel of Rome today.  We examine Bernini’s training as an artist, uncover his personal life, and document his rise as an artist who shapes the Eternal City.  Along the way, we find he was friends with popes and princes, respected by some and envied by others.
During our time together, we'll encounter Bernini’s 100-foot-tall Baldacchino inside St. Peter’s—and find out where he really got the bronze to create it. We also discover the symbolism of Bernini’s colonnade which frames St. Peter’s Basilica, and then find Bernini’s emotional statue of Constantine, the 4th century Roman Emperor who converts to Christianity.
Of course, we do not miss Bernini’s fountains and masterful theatrical creations that decorate church interiors. We finish with Bernini’s Bridge of Angels, created late in the artist’s career—filled with Baroque passion and energy, and expressing Bernini’s own hope for salvation.
Led by art historian Jayne Yantz, this seminar is designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels.  The seminar will provide participants with an introduction to Baroque art, an understanding of the contributions made by Bernini, and a list of Baroque highlights to seek out next time we are in Rome.

Jayne Yantz completed graduate work in art history and anthropology before beginning a career in college teaching. A very good look into the man's place in history and culture. Excellent illustrations of B's work. Who knew how much of his work is found in Rome? I wish I had known this before my last visit.
