On this virtual tour broadcasted live from central Berlin, we will visit the city's most famous sights, beginning with the renowned Brandenburg Gate and ending up at Checkpoint Charlie. This video-camera-led virtual tour will use high-definition broadcasting, image stabilization, and wind-proof audio technology to ensure participants the best possible immersive experience.

We’ll kick off our time together at the eighteenth-century Brandenburg Gate: traversed by Napoleon upon conquering Prussia, and by Hitler upon his inauguration. The Gate was lucky to stay standing through WWII and was then shut for 28 years of the Cold War, isolated in the border zone of the Berlin Wall. Now it's our turn to walk through it.

We will go on to see the German House of Parliament (the Reichstag) and discuss its chequered twentieth-century history. We will walk through the remarkable Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe - and over the roof of Hitler's bunker immediately thereafter, to discuss the curious juxtaposition of these two neighboring locations. The last colossal building of the Third Reich left in central Berlin, Hermann Goering's Luftwaffe HQ will follow - and in keeping with chronology, we will see the Berlin Wall and its most famous gate, Checkpoint Charlie, to finish.

Led by an expert on Berlin history, Dr. Finn Ballard, this interactive seminar will transport viewers to the capital city of the twentieth century. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of Berlin's complex narrative.

Finn grew up in Northern Ireland before moving to England to study and later teach in the department of Film and Literature at the University of Warwick. He completed his doctoral study on German folklore and popular cinema in 2012, and has published extensively in the fields of Film Studies and Gender Studies. Since 2008, he has been living and guiding in Berlin. He now works as a historical advisor for television and film productions set in Berlin, particularly during the Weimar era or Third Reich. He is a journalist for the 'Siegessauele', Europe's foremost Queer magazine, and organises events at Berlin's English-language bookstore 'Another Country'.

Virtual Tour Berlin

Finn presented a terrific tour of Berlin with both historical and current aspects of the city. Having been to Berlin before, I learned many things on Finn's virtual tour that I did not learn when I was there in person. I look forward to some of Finn's future seminars.

Dr. Ballard is a wonderful guide to Berlin’s sights for anyone who has never been to this historically complex city. He knows the major narrative of the city as well as entertaining pieces of city lore that continually enrich his tour of Berlin. In particular, he was able to show how and where the Berlin wall bifurcated the city which brought that difficult subject to life.
