Join musician and music scholar Peter Medhurst for a unique look at the work of Ludwig van Beethoven in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth. From his Piano in London, Peter will play excerpts from Beethoven’s greatest works, beginning with the Pathétique Sonata and chartering a course through the symphonies, the string quartets, and the choral music.

Leonard Bernstein once observed “what makes Beethoven great is his perfect sense of form – his ability to realize what the next note always had to be.” In this seminar, we will explore Beethoven’s self-assuredness in his music and also see the craftsmanship of his composition, how he shaped and honed his ideas until the right solution presented itself. The artist himself described his process “‘I carry my thoughts around with me for a long time . . . I change things, discard and try again until I am satisfied”. Together we will look at how his music took shape and evolved.

Led by a musician and scholar, Peter Medhurst, this interactive seminar will explore Beethoven’s musical style through discussion and live performance. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an understanding of what it is that gives Beethoven’s music its unique sound.

This conversation is part of a musical series with Peter Medhurst. Each session is designed as a stand-alone seminar as well as part of the series.

Peter Medhurst appears in the UK and abroad as musician and scholar, giving recitals and delivering illustrated lectures on music and the arts. He studied composition and early keyboard instruments at the Royal College of Music in London, and singing with Erik Werba at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. He is known today for his lecture-recital work which has taken him to Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, as well as to all the major cities in Europe. He lectures for The Arts Society, The National Trust, and The Art Fund. Peter also leads tours abroad to places like Venice, Rome, Berlin, Vienna, and Madrid, and as part of the time spent exploring these places he gives organ recitals on the historic instruments in the various cathedrals and churches.

Music Appreciation for the Musically Uneducated

I adored this seminar with Peter Medhurst. I am woefully ignorant of classical music. This session on Beethoven covered both the biographical elements of Beethoven's life and his evolution as a composer. At his piano, Peter was able to demonstrate in an easily understandable way how the style of Beethoven's works went from the Baroque to the Romantic. I truly enjoyed both this session and the earlier session on Handle that Peter led. I am looking forward to any other conversations he leads on music!
