Join us as we explore one of the most important Museum Collections in the world, featuring Renaissance-era sculpture masterpieces by Donatello, Michelangelo, Giambologna, Benvenuto Cellini, and more – nestled in the heart of Florence, Italy.

In this first of two sessions about the Bargello, we will explore the history of the palace (as the former medieval prison of Florence), its function in the administration of justice in Medieval and Renaissance Florence, and the nineteenth-century transformation that turned it into the national museum for Renaissance sculpture.

We will discover the world-renown works of celebrated masters and the historical and social context within which they were created. This conversation will include the highlights of Donatello, such as his David and Saint George, Verrocchio’s David, Michelangelo’s Bacchus and Brutus, and Tondo Pitti in the medieval rooms of the palace, and Giambologna’s Neptune alongside other works in the palace’s courtyard.

Led by Florentine art historian Dr. Alessandra Becucci, this conversation will introduce participants to the history of Italian Renaissance sculpture through the exploration of one of the most important – and least crowded – art museums in Florence, Italy.

Born and raised in Florence, Alessandra has a degree in art history from the University of Florence with a specialization in seventeenth-century painting. She obtained an MRes from the European University Institute in Florence, where she defended her Ph.D in history, focusing on the patronage of Tuscan nobility in Europe during the seventeenth century. She has been teaching art history and Italian for several years in various schools and institutions in Florence.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.

Such a very interesting seminar with Dr. Becucci. I particularly enjoyed her conversation of the different versions of David. Dr. Becucci is an excellent teacher!

Great Presentation

These museums can be overwhelming. I love the selections that Dr. Becucci chose to talk about and especially how she mirrored those pieces to similar works.

An Excellent Instructor

Dr. Becucci is an excellent instructor. She is well versed in her subject and presents in an entertaining and engaging style. I’ve taken several of her courses and have thoroughly enjoyed them all. She gave us great insight today into one of Florence’s lesser known museums.
