The Aztecs are probably one of the most fascinating ancient cultures in the Americas. Often compared to the ancient Romans, their empire spanned the continent. This seminar will trace the rise of the Aztecs as a regional power in Mesoamerica and their ultimate demise at the hands of the Spanish conquistadors in the sixteenth century. The story of the Aztecs is inextricably linked with the story of the New World and European expansion.

The impact of the Aztec world was far-reaching. With many overlapping characteristics with Maya and Inca civilizations, The Aztecs rose to power in central Mexico in the 1300s. Based on an organized system of city-states, advanced technologies, and agriculture, they were a force to be reckoned with. The splendor of their cities has been compared to Venice, their mighty power on par with the ancient Romans. Wave upon wave of potential conquerors was pushed back for centuries.

This seminar will focus on the center of Aztec power: Mexico City. We will learn about the geography of their empire and its central core. The Aztec domination of central Mexico is a history full of intrigue, betrayal, love, and of course, war. We will learn how the Aztecs overcame adversity to become the most profitable and successful society until their ultimate downfall in the 1500s. We will analyze the timeline of the events leading up to the establishment of the new Spanish colony in Mexico and learn how this changed Aztec history for good.

Led by an expert on the history and archeological civilization of Mexico, Luis Luis-Martinez, this interactive seminar will explore the history of the Aztecs in Mexico. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with increased knowledge about the history of Aztec culture and civilization.

Born and raised in Mexico City, Luis became a professional archaeological and cultural tour guide after studying tourism at the Instituto Politecnico Nacional. Fluent in Spanish, English, and French, Luis is passionate about cultural immersion, travel, and volunteering. He lives in the Riviera Maya.

A good history lesson

Luis Luis-Martinez is a lively, engaging presenter and this was a comprehensive and fast history lesson with helpful visuals and recommendations. It was not an archeological perspective which was fine for me but maybe not for others.
