Join Tiago Neiva to explore the amazing natural, historical and cultural sites of the Portuguese Archipelago of the Azores – Açores.

The Azores Islands are a Portuguese volcanic-origin archipelago located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean: about 1,500 km (930 mi) from Lisbon and 3,900 km (2,400 mi) from the east coast of North America. It’s formed by nine major islands and eight small reefs: the Formigas, or the ants.

The archipelago has played a role throughout Portuguese History: it was “discovered” by navigators at the beginning of the Age of Discovery, and was soon populated by Portuguese and Flemish settlers in the fifteenth century. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, these islands were one of the main centers of trade between Europe, the Americas, and India. From the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries, the development of several industries (dairy and cattle farming, fishing, and whaling) and the introduction of some new agriculture products (such as pineapple, tea, and tobacco) came to define the urban and natural landscape of the islands and influence its traditions and gastronomy.

In the twentieth century, the Azores became an important strategic point for Allied Forces in World War II, and later, during the Cold War, the islands were home to an American airbase. The relationship with North America is further reinforced by several large Azorian emigrant communities in the United States and in Canada, now in their third generation.

More recently, sustainable, ecological, and small-scale tourism has become the main attraction of this archipelago, now considered to be one of the most beautiful, authentic, and untouched landscapes in the world, awarded with two UNESCO Historical and Natural World Sites.

Led by an expert on Architecture and Art History, Tiago Miranda Neiva, this interactive seminar will explore the history, geography, and multiple attractions of one of the most beautiful Islands in the world, still undiscovered and preserved from mass tourism. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a better knowledge of the landscape and traditions of the Archipelago of Azores.

Tiago Miranda Neiva was born and raised in Lisbon. For several years he was Professor of Arts and Art History, having a Master's degree in Teaching of Visual Arts. He is currently working towards a PhD focused on the Art and Architecture of al-Andalus: the confluence between the Arab, Jewish and Christian medieval world. In recent years he has been working as a tour guide in his hometown, seeking to show and reveal its most intimate secrets through an authentic and passionate local vision.

Excellent, Detailed Introduction

Tiago Neiva did an excellent job of fitting so much detail into a short time without seeming hurried. The organization into subject matter categories was really helpful as a general introduction and as guidance for more specific interests.
