In this lecture, we will examine the collision of art and material culture through the expansive trade of the Dutch East and West India Companies. Founded in 1602, the Dutch East India Company flourished and survived for two centuries. The ports of this company, ranging from Brazil to Batavia (Indonesia), were catalysts of exchange.

Part 1: The Founding and VOC in Batavia (Java)
This lecture will examine the foundations of the Dutch capitalist arm, the Vereenigde Nederlandsche Geoctroyeerde Oostindische Compagnie (abbreviated as the VOC), also known as the Dutch East India Company. The company was formed during the twelve-year truce in the Dutch Republic's war with Spain, representing a momentary gasp of independence. The first site for colonial activities was the islands of modern-day Indonesia. The VOC established a base in a city they called Batavia, now known as Java. We will see how the indigenous arts were impacted by the Dutch presence.

Led by art historian and Early Modern Dutch expert, Jessica Sternbach, this lecture will look closely at issues of translation and appropriation of imported materials and cultural ideas. In addition to discussing art and its context, participants will be introduced to relevant scholarship and appreciate the trade, appropriation, and translation of artistic objects and ideas.

Jessica Sternbach began studying Art History at Willamette University and was instantly drawn to the vivid colors and impeccable detail of Northern Renaissance artworks. She continued this passion for the Northern painters throughout her education at the Institute of Fine Arts (MA) and Temple University where she is currently working on her Ph.D. Travel has always been a passion for Jessica who studied abroad in Rome during her junior year at Willamette and returned to the Eternal City for a summer to work at Context Travel’s Rome office. Since that time, she has visited several countries checking off her art “bucket list.” During her time in Los Angeles, she worked at the Getty Center and the Getty Villa.
