Along with the Great Wall of China and India’s Taj Mahal, Petra was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007. This seminar provides an overview of Jordan’s rich archaeological history, from the earliest prehistoric settlements to Roman cities, the rock-hewn tombs, and temples of Nabataean Petra and beyond.

In Jordan, traces of the past are everywhere. In this seminar, we will explore some of the most famous and spectacular archaeological sites, including Jerash—one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the Middle East—and the awe-inspiring city of Petra, which was hewn by the Nabataeans from imposing rose-colored rock faces. But we will also discuss lesser-known—but equally fascinating—sites, from Jordan’s first villages to out-of-the-way temples and castles.

After a short overview of Jordan’s diverse landscapes, we will examine the earliest evidence for human occupation in the country before moving on to the appearance of some of the world’s first farming settlements, which have produced fascinating objects like the famed ‘Ain Ghazal statues. We will explore the appearance of walled cities and sites with Biblical connections. We will investigate the appearance of the Romans and the importance of Petra and the Nabataeans, before discussing key sites from the Byzantine, Islamic, and Crusader periods.

The seminar will focus on the artifacts, art, and architecture that exemplify Jordan’s rich archaeological history but we will also consider broader themes in Middle Eastern and world archaeology to provide context to these fascinating objects and places. We will also discuss the forces that are threatening Jordan’s archaeological sites and how these challenges are being addressed by policymakers.

Led by an expert on the archaeology of Jordan, Dr. Kevin Gibbs, this interactive seminar will explore some of the most important archaeological sites in the country. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of Jordan’s rich archaeological history.

Very informative and interesting

Dr. Gibbs did a terrific job of taking us through all the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Jordan as well as all the ones on the Tentative List. What was so great was his explanation of historical periods and how he presented each site within its historical context so that we understood each site's meaning and importance. It was a fascinating way to learn more about Jordan's history and I realized that when I go to Jordan I will want to be there for at least a week, if not more. Dr. Gibbs is a very knowledgeable presenter who is also engaging, well-organized, dynamic, and clear. The visuals were outstanding.
