Learn about Anime - the mind-blowing world of Japanese animation. How is Anime reflected in contemporary Japanese culture and what are the key Anime locations a fan should visit around the country? In this seminar, we will explore the wonderful world of anime.

Over the last century, anime – a term that covers all animation made in Japan – has become a phenomenon of world popular culture. A global audience of children, teens, and adults thrill to images of doe-eyed, spiky-haired youths, giant laser-blasting robots, nifty footed ninja, and cute little monsters - characters that have become as redolent of Japan as geisha, samurai, and sushi.

However, there remains a multitude of misconceptions about what anime is and how, as an art form, it differs from animation made elsewhere. In this seminar, we will cover anime’s history and its connection to manga, the equally amazing universe of Japanese comic books and graphic novels. We will get to know some of the key works in anime’s pantheon, and their creators, as well as taking a look at how the medium reflects the culture and lifestyle of Japan. And we will go on a tour of Japan, taking in must-see anime-connected sites, including museums, theme parks, and locations that have inspired anime gems such as Spirited Away and Your Name.

Led by an expert on Japan and the author of the Rough Guide to Anime, Simon Richmond, this interactive seminar provides a primer on the creative force that is anime and how it can be a fun way to learn about and explore Japan. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of and appreciation for the mind-blowing world of Japanese animation.

Taking my 15 year old granddaughter to JPan on a pop culture tour. This lecture was perfect for me.

Interesting overview

Nicely done seminar, but I think I was looking for a little more depth about the anime itself. Certainly useful for anyone planning an 'anime pilgrimage' to Japan.
