Between the 3rd and 4th centuries AD, Milan became one of the capitals of the mighty Roman Empire and we’re lucky that the city still boasts important traces of that golden age. This Conversation will explore such treasures such as the remains of the Forum and the Circus, the Theater and the Amphitheater, and of magnificent early Christian churches rich in mosaics and decorations, such as San Lorenzo, Sant'Ambrogio, and Sant'Eustorgio.
”In Milan it’s all wonderful”. These words of admiration for Milan were written by Ausonio, one of the most important Roman writers and poets of the 4th century A.D., when Milan became one of the capitals of the Roman Empire. In order to control the borders of the vast empire, already challenged by clashes, wars, and barbaric invasions, four imperial capitals were founded: Milan, Trier (today in Germany), Sirmio (today in Serbia), and Nicomedia (today in Turkey).
We’ll learn how Milan was converted into a rich and luxurious capital, with the embellishment of the Circus, the Imperial Palace, the Baths, the city gates, and magnificent churches rich in decorations and mosaics. We’ll look at some of these churches in detail, such as Santa Tecla (now Milan Cathedral), San Lorenzo, and Sant'Ambrogio. We will rediscover the traces of this important period and we will realize that many of these sites can still be visited today.
Led by an expert on art and history, Laura Benitti, this interactive seminar will be dedicated to the rediscovery of Roman Milan. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with increased knowledge about roman times in Northern Italy beyond the city of Rome.
Laura was born in Turin, where she studied history of art, but moved to Milan in 2002. Since her graduation, she has accumulated a long experience as an art consultant and registrar in a few museums in Turin, as well as expertise as a local Milan guide. She loves to be both an experienced and friendly local ambassador of Milan and Como area for her travelers.
