From the dawn of history to the decline of the Ancient World, explore the history of the Greeks and discover what made their culture so unique. Learn why the culture of Ancient Greece is still relevant to modern civilization today and how contemporary politics, science, and art began in Ancient Greece.

Why study Ancient Greek history? Why did Greece become the center of the known world for so long? To answer these questions, we will start at the beginning by looking at Greece at the dawn of the Iron Age. We will continue to the collapse of the Roman Empire and the origins of the Middle Ages. From the Minoans and the Mycenaean Greeks to the rise of the City-States, the Persian Wars, the fight for power between Athens and Sparta, the conquests of Alexander the Great, the Hellenistic World, and the arrival of the Romans in the Greek World, we will provide a full overview of ancient Greek History.

We will focus on the birth of Democracy, the flourishing of Philosophy, the birth of Theatre and Drama, and innovations in arts and science. We will put Ancient Greece into a global historical context and explore the interactions of ancient civilizations. From the Egyptians and the Phoenicians to the Romans, we will use historical events as the backdrop for our explorations, which will include the political institutions, the culture, arts, philosophy, and other aspects of private and public life in Ancient Greece.

Led by an expert on Ancient Greek History, Panos Papageorgopoulos, this interactive seminar will delve into the history of Ancient Greece. Designed to inform curiosity and future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of the historical events, the political transformations, and the cultural achievements that forged Ancient Greece.

A lot to cover in an hour and a half!

Too much material for one session. Would like to have it divided into separate session, one on Myceceans, Hellenistic, Classic a Greece, etc.

Panos made excellent use of maps, charts and photos in expertly covering several thousand years of Greek history. It was a fast-paced presentation that required full attention but his knowledge and enthusiasm made for an educational and enjoyable 90 minutes.

Wonderful Overview of the Ancient Greek World in too little time!

A fascinating romp through the Ancient Greek World. But this really should be a context course as there was too much material for a 1 1/2 hours seminar. Make sure your brain is rested and your focus is acute for this one!!!

Very knowledgeable

Very good and detailed presentation. Mr. Papageorgopoulos clearly is very knowledgeable. His accent prevented me from understanding everything he said, and the connection blanked out several times. I wish I could have understood more.
