Amsterdam, the capital city of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, boasts of having a UNESCO-listed city center with its circular waterways. It is well-known for its important museums such as the Rijksmuseum, the Vincent van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House, the Royal Palace, and plenty of other museums. Amsterdam is a vibrant city, with two universities that attract young folk to come and live here. Thus, with lots of modern architecture, art, ballet, opera, and modern music and dance, and places to eat, drink, and dance. After all, this is MY city!

Your expert, Dr. Alette Fleischer, will give you ten highlights that you can visit whilst staying in Amsterdam. Most of the trips you can do on foot, by bicycle or by local transport. Amsterdam is a very compact city! Let me talk about some must-see museums but let me also take you to lesser-known sites. Hidden museums, quirky shops and art galleries, flea markets and street markets, and to the hip new area of Amsterdam North (once the rough ‘hood’ for shipbuilders and squatters). But also let me bring you to my neighborhood called ‘the Pipe’, a mixture of old and young, local and foreign, inhabitants, all living in a village-feel neighborhood. It is a cozy neighborhood, where folks greet each other, shop keepers know your name, and life is very agreeable. Of course, I will not forget to introduce some of my favorite shops, bars, and restaurants!

Led by Dr. Alette Fleischer, an expert on 17th-century Dutch art and culture, and a native from Amsterdam, this interactive seminar will introduce a variety of Amsterdam’s worthwhile museums, sites, and walks for first-time visitors and seasoned travelers. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with ideas to go both on and off the beaten path, and how to get the maximum ‘Amsterdam experience’ in a short span of time.

Amsterdam-born Alette Fleischer has a degree in Art History and a PhD in 17th Dutch History, focusing on gardens, science, and technology. She has curated several exhibitions, publishes articles, presents lectures, and a proud Context Expert. For Context Travel, Alette has led the Rijksmuseum tours many times. Motto: staying curious is key for being a good historian.
