Led by a true native of Amsterdam, Alette Fleischer’s virtual walk is broadcasted live from Amsterdam’s Eastside. Starting outside the Rembrandt House Museum and ending outside the Rijksmuseum, we will tour along the waterways and streets, and over some of the many bridges. The video-camera-led virtual tour will weave and wind its way through “Venice of the North” creating opportunities for reflection, dialogue, and an immersive visual experience.

We will begin from Rembrandt’s old home, now a museum, along the Amstel river, passing the Hermitage Museum and across the Skinny Bridge. We’ll then head up the fancy Herengracht (Gentlemen’s canal), where we will stroll past some of Amsterdam’s grandest mansions. Most of these are turned into law firms, banks, hotels (the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam), or into museums (Museum Van Loon). Via the fine arts and antique street called Spiegelstraat, with its shops filled with Delftware, Chinaware, silver, glassware, and paintings, we will end our tour at the Rijksmuseum (exterior).

We will be covering quite some ground as we encounter both familiar highlights and lesser-known landmarks. This live virtual walk will show participants Amsterdam’s finest areas, great houses, lovely antique shops, and if we are in luck, we can see an actual Rembrandt hanging in one of those houses.

Led by the expert local guide and cultural historian, Dr. Alette Fleischer, this interactive virtual tour will allow participants to experience how the rich lived in Amsterdam’s Golden Age and learn about the cultural history of Amsterdam. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with increased awareness of the city’s layered cultural history thanks to a virtual immersion in Eastside Amsterdam.

Amsterdam-born Alette Fleischer has a degree in Art History and a PhD in 17th Dutch History, focusing on gardens, science, and technology. She has curated several exhibitions, publishes articles, presents lectures, and a proud Context Expert. For Context Travel, Alette has led the Rijksmuseum tours many times. Motto: staying curious is key for being a good historian.
